Rotary Polio Eradication
Polio is highly infectious and spreads rapidly. As long as polio threatens one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere are at risk.
Since 1988 the number of polio endemic countries declined from 125 to 3- Aghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
In 1985, over 300,000 cases were reported. In 2017 there were only 22 cases of Polio-a 99.9% reduction. 5 cases have been reported YTD through
March 2018-all in Afghanistan.
If Polio is not completely eradicated, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 children will be paralysed by it each year. It is only a plane ride away.
At Rotary’s 2017 International Convention in Atlanta, global leaders pledged $ 1.2 billion to the fight to eradicate polio. This pledge included
Rotary’s commitment to raise $50 million per year over the next three years as part of the End Polio Now:Countdown to History campaign.
Under an expanded partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, every $1 that Rotary commits to Polio eradication will be matched 2-to- 1
(up to $ 50 million per year)
YOU can be part of history by supporting the polio eradication effort-and seeing only the second infectious disease that effects humans ever to be eradicated (after smallpox) from the face of the earth.
Thanks for your support.
